Tricks - Poi Spinning

Poi has a long tradition of New Zealand's Maori people. Poi are weighted balls at the end of strings, which have a long and colourful ribbon attached, so that they can be swung around the body and spun into making beautiful patterns. Poi spinning is a fun way to express yourself through movement and learning Poi to some up-tempo music is a must!

Getting Started

In order to gain a basic understanding of how poi works, you should consider that you are standing within a dice. There are 4 walls surrounding you (front, left, behind and to the right of you) and of course the floor below you and ceiling above you. These six walls will form the pattern that your poi will move in.

With this knowledge, you can probably imagine the sort of movements that you can make with each poi at the side of your body:

both poi going forwards
both poi going backwards
one poi going forwards and the other going backwards

Combine the above movements with changing the speed of the poi, so that:

the poi both move at the same speed (synchronised)
one poi is half a circle ahead of the other one (out of synchronisation)

So far, the moves you have been doing, have been at each side of your body, but of course you can also swing one poi above your head, while doing something different with the other poi, and you have in front of your body to play with, so you can draw circles with the poi in front of you. If you have the poi doing circles in front of your body, then the poi should be out of synch with each other, so they do not collide!

Follow and Cross: Have one poi follow the other poi wherever it goes, so you could circle in front of you on a horizontal plane (eg a circle out from your body), with the other poi following close behind, and then swing them above your head, so it looks as if one is chasing the other!

What next?

If you have mastered all these tricks and are ready to move on, then please let me know. I will be happy to write more of the tricks that are possible with ring juggling. One good way to reinforce what you have learned, is to teach others. When you explain a trick, it sometimes helps to reinforce it in your own mind (and you will therefore understand the trick better!)
