EJC2002 - Fundraising to get to Bremen

The aim of this page is to show you the highs and lows of our fundraising to get 8 members from Stirling Juggling Project to EJC2002 from 8-16 August 2002. We needed to raise £250 each to cover all our travel and convention ticket prices, plus bring our own money for living costs and spending on shiny new toys!

The idea that we could all get to Bremen was conceived one night in the pub after our Juggling Club (as many idea's are hatched in such a place)! First up, we held the following event:

All Singing All Dancing Stirling Juggling Project Sensational Fundraising Extravaganza!!! (28 June 2002)

Starring:

Captain Duncan Smith
Gordon Riddoch
Michael Sinclair
Ewan Colsell
Andy Gill
David McFarlane
George the Juggler

and your Compere: Richard Allen

Unfortunately, this event didn't attract many people, other than friends and family to see this most excellent show. The people who did attend told us that they would invite all their friends if we held another one, but this was of no help to us in the short term! This event raised about £150, mainly due to their being a licensed bar on the premises!

Thanks to

  • Euan of Europa Music (for the PA System)
  • Lesley (for driving)
  • Settle Inn, Barnton Bistro and O'Reilly's for their donations for the raffle
  • Richard Allen (our most excellent Compere)
  • Off the Record for their support and resources

What Next????

We knew that we were a long way short of our target figure, and only had 6 more weeks to raise the full £2000 that was needed…

It was decided to take part in running juggling workshops all over the Central Belt. We would charge £50 for a 2 hour workshop, and all that money would go in the kitty. There would be 3 leaders present at each event (these were the people who were to go to Bremen). We ran over 20 workshops throughout the summer. We had arranged with Stirling Council for us to receive payment a week before we were due to set off for Bremen (even though we still had a couple of workshops to do), but sadly with a week to go, there was no sign of the much needed cheque…

So What happened next????

An emergency meeting was called by our Captain Duncan Smith. He had totalled up the amount of money and donations we had received so far, and we knew that any cheques we received wouldn't be clear in time, so Duncan informed us that there was only enough money for 5 of us to go to Bremen. Duncan and Dave both stepped down from the trip immediately (which was a very generous thing to do), which meant that out of the 6 of us remaining, one person had to step down unvoluntarily… Who was it going to be… George, Euan, Steve (me), Steven D, Lee or Andy???

Lee bravely told us that he would step down from the trip, and everyone else (apart from me) told him that it wasn't fair, and our names should go in a hat. George's name was not put in the hat, as we needed an experienced Convention person to go with us. Sadly, my name was pulled out of the hat…

The others felt really bad, as they could see that I was upset. Lee, Steven D and Andy announced that they hadn't given up hope and told us that they were going to do a sponsored leg waxing on the Friday to raise money for me to go too. It managed to raise about another £100. In the meantime, I was able to borrow the full £250 from my parents, on the assurance, that when I came back from Bremen, I would be refunded by the Juggling Club, so this meant that the 6 of us could go.

WHOOOOPEEEE!

I hope that you enjoyed the story of how we managed to get to Bremen. Thanks to Duncan and Dave for stepping down from the trip. It wasn't the same without those guys, and we fully appreciate it. This story continues on the EJC2002 Review (Steve) page.
