15th British Juggling Convention
Parade and Games
 |
I have taken part in juggling parades
before, but never this large an event! Graham
Benson (from Glasgow Juggling Club) made me and
Steve Dobinson some balloon viking hats, and I
also got a balloon viking belt and sword! I took
clubs and 4 balls with me also, as I knew the
games were at the end of the parade. |
 |
The locals turned up in full force to watch
the parade and they really seemed to enjoy the
juggling games also.
Steve and I joined up with the wonderful Liz
who we had met the night before, and the three
of us walked through the parade directly behind
the excellent band. Occasionally doing some
swordfights, or for Liz to staff spin, or Steve
to diabolo.

The games were excellent. I have only ever seen a
small range of juggling games before, but we had such
a wide range of events for the public to watch and
be entertained by (a few of them mentioned below):
- unicycle gladiators - excellent fun to
watch. I can only just unicycle, so I fully appreciate
the amount of skill it takes to stay on your unicycle
when you are being rammed from all sides!
- unicycle musical chairs - perhaps the highlight
of the competition when the music stopped and a
wee girl had to be lifted up onto a giraffe unicycle!
This wee girl went on to win (with a little help)
quite a few events - although she didn't compete
in the 7 ball endurance for some reason ;-)
- club gladiators - my favourite game! These
guys were good, and I only lasted halfway on both
rounds - I think Glyn won both rounds!
- diabolo in a cone - DevilStick Peat stood
at one side with a traffic cone on his head, and
everyone tossed their diabolo's, but no-one managed
to get them into the cone (even when Peat tried
to catch them)!
 |
One vivid memory for me was watching
a steward repeatedly tell a family to move back
from the action so that they didn't get hit, and
as he was walking away, he noticed a club flying
straight towards the wee girl. He turned right
round and swept her out of the way just in time...What
a hero! |
 |
The games of course ended with the
massive toss-up of all our juggling equipment,
which is always fun! I have always stuck to the
outside on other occasions, but decided to stand
in the centre this time, and didn't get hit once.
It took a full 5 minutes to find my 3 clubs though! |
